Browns RB Nick Chubb Likely Out for Season After Suffering Knee Injury on Monday Night

3 min read

Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb, widely regarded as one of the premier running backs in the NFL, suffered a devastating knee injury during Monday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. This injury is expected to sideline him for the remainder of the season, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

It’s reported that Chubb may have torn multiple ligaments in his knee, though the exact extent of the damage will be confirmed after undergoing imaging on Tuesday. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski expressed his sympathy for Chubb and acknowledged the severity of the injury, emphasizing Chubb’s outstanding character both on and off the field.

“Obviously, Nick’s got a very significant knee injury, which is, you feel for the person,” Stefanski said after the game. “He’s a great football player, as we know, but he’s an even better person. So we will support him every step along the way.”

The injury occurred in the second quarter when Chubb was tackled low by Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, causing his left knee to buckle inward. Chubb immediately clutched his leg in pain, prompting the medical staff to attend to him. He was subsequently carted off the field and ruled out for the remainder of the game. The injury was so gruesome that television broadcasts chose not to replay the incident.

Despite this devastating setback, Steelers fans displayed their sportsmanship and empathy by chanting “Chubb” as he was being transported off the field. Chubb had an emotional response to the injury, recognizing the severity of the situation.

Notably, Chubb had previously suffered significant knee injuries during his college career at the University of Georgia, including tears to the PCL (Posterior Cruciate Ligament), MCL (Medial Collateral Ligament), and LCL (Lateral Collateral Ligament) in his left knee. Unfortunately, it’s the same knee that was injured during Monday night’s game.

Chubb, known for his remarkable consistency and performance excellence, is a four-time Pro Bowler who has achieved four consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons. He had started the 2023 season impressively, rushing for 106 yards in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals and accumulating 64 yards on 10 carries in the ill-fated Monday night game.

Following Chubb’s departure, running back Jerome Ford stepped in and contributed with a 3-yard touchdown reception. Ford had a significant impact on the game, carrying the ball 16 times for 106 yards, including a remarkable 69-yard run. The Browns will heavily rely on Ford and other players to try to fill the void left by Chubb, who has never missed more than four games in a single NFL season.

Nick Chubb, while often described as soft-spoken, is an invaluable asset to the Cleveland Browns both on and off the field. He has been the team’s engine since his rookie season in 2018 and is deeply respected in the Browns’ locker room and throughout the league. The outpouring of support and well-wishes from fellow players and fans on social media underscored his impact and the respect he has garnered throughout his career.

Moving forward without Chubb will undoubtedly pose a significant challenge for the Browns, as they strive to rebound from their loss on Monday night and navigate the remainder of the season without their star running back.
