“Chandramukhi 2” revisits the iconic elements that made the 2005 Rajinikanth-Jyotika blockbuster a sensation. Directed by P Vasu, this sequel brings back the charm but also carries a sense of predictability.

In 2005, when petrol prices were a far cry from today’s rates and popcorn was still an affordable cinema snack, the Tamil film industry witnessed the release of “Chandramukhi.” This film, an adaptation of the Malayalam hit “Manichitrathazhu,” became a sensation among Tamil audiences. With a blend of comedy, drama, and supernatural elements, “Chandramukhi” earned a special place in the hearts of cinephiles. Directed by P Vasu and starring the legendary Rajinikanth, it left an indelible mark on Tamil cinema.

Eighteen years later, in 2023, “Chandramukhi 2” makes its entrance. The iconic moon-faced girl, Chandramukhi, is back, but this time without Rajinikanth. Instead, we have Raghava Lawrence stepping into the shoes of the legendary actor. While the film may lack the original’s star power, director P Vasu ensures that it retains the essence of the franchise and caters to the nostalgia of fans.

Plot Summary: “Chandramukhi 2” plunges into the story right away. It revolves around a troubled family facing various issues, both within their luxurious house and beyond. A learned man believes that their problems stem from neglecting their ancestral temple visits. In an attempt to rectify this, the family decides to embark on a trip to their ancestral temple and stay in a nearby palace. This palace featured prominently in the first film, and its return marks the revival of familiar elements.

Enter Pandian (played by Raghava Lawrence), who makes a memorable entry by rescuing children held hostage in a bus, displaying incredible heroics. Pandian’s connection with the troubled family is initially vague but soon solidifies as he becomes an integral part of their journey. As the family faces eerie occurrences inside the house and encounters a cursed temple during their trip, Pandian takes on the role of a problem solver. The film explores whether Pandian can overcome these supernatural challenges.

A Mix of Spooks and Laughter: “Chandramukhi 2” retains the template of its predecessor, offering a blend of spooky and light-hearted moments. The film transitions between scenes of tension and those filled with joy. The supernatural occurrences inside the house are juxtaposed with scenes of happiness, creating a rhythmic pattern that keeps the audience engaged. Vadivelu, known for his impeccable comic timing, adds a touch of goofiness to the narrative. His interactions with Pandian evoke nostalgia, especially for those who watched the 2005 original in theaters.

Performance Highlights: Raghava Lawrence, acclaimed for his dancing prowess, delivers impressive dance sequences throughout the film. While he initially attempts Rajinikanth’s mannerisms, he truly shines in the second half, showcasing exceptional body language and performance. However, there are minor issues with lip-sync, with dialogues appearing out of sync with the performance.

Kangana Ranaut, although a prominent name in Indian cinema, has limited involvement in the film. She contributes with a few songs and dance sequences but plays a relatively minor role in the narrative. Supporting actors, including Lakshmi Menon and Radhikaa, deliver performances in line with their character requirements.

Director’s Clever Approach: P Vasu, who helmed the original “Chandramukhi,” wisely retains much of the template that worked well in the 2005 blockbuster. The film’s music, including the popular track “RaRa,” resonates with the nostalgia of the original. MM Keeravani’s music and sounds transport the audience to a different era of Tamil cinema, providing a refreshing contrast to the contemporary soundscape dominated by Anirudh.

Conclusion: “Chandramukhi 2” offers a cocktail of elements for audiences to savor. It boasts thunderous music, entertaining supernatural encounters, and even historical war sequences. However, at its core, the film is a modern rehash of the iconic Rajinikanth and Jyotika starrer from 2005. While it may not surpass the original in terms of impact, “Chandramukhi 2” successfully revives nostalgia and pays homage to a classic that holds a special place in the hearts of Tamil cinema enthusiasts.
