Neeraj Chopra, the renowned Olympic and World champion in javelin throw, recently participated in the Diamond League Finals, where he aimed to defend his title. Unfortunately, he couldn’t secure the top position this time, settling for second place with a throw of 83.80 meters.

Chopra, the Indian star javelin thrower, who had made history by clinching gold at the World Championships, faced tough competition in the Diamond League Finals held in the United States. His performance in Eugene, Oregon, saw him achieve a distance of 83.80 meters, which was a decent effort but not enough to reclaim the title.

The 25-year-old Neeraj Chopra had to compete in the finals at the Hayward Field. Two of his attempts resulted in fouls, adding to the challenge. Just a month before, he had proudly won the gold medal at the World Championships. In the Diamond League Finals, his best throw came during his second attempt when he launched the javelin to a distance of 83.80 meters, following a foul in his initial try. His other attempts measured 81.37 meters, another foul, 80.74 meters, and 80.90 meters.

The Diamond League is an elite one-day competition comprised of 13 stages. Neeraj’s performance in Eugene marked his first throw below 85 meters in the current season. Despite this, his earlier performances had secured his place in the Diamond League Finals, where he had previously triumphed in 2022 with a remarkable throw of 88.44 meters in Zurich. Unfortunately, the cooler temperatures in Eugene, where it was below 25 degrees Celsius, prevented him from reaching the 85-meter mark.

The competition witnessed Jakub Vadlejch from the Czech Republic seizing the Diamond League trophy and a prize money of $32,000 with a throw of 84.24 meters. Finland’s Oliver Helander secured the third position with his best throw measuring 83.74 meters.

Reflecting on his impact on Indian athletics, Neeraj Chopra expressed that his achievements, including becoming an Olympic champion, have instilled a belief in people in India that they too can excel. He mentioned his gold medal win in Budapest at the World Championships, believing that it would bring about positive changes in Indian athletics.

Previously, Neeraj had finished as the runner-up at the same venue during the World Championships in 2022. His personal best throw stands at 89.94 meters, and his season’s best was 88.77 meters. Leading up to his historic gold medal at the World Championships, he had won two individual Diamond League competitions in Doha on May 5 and in Lucerne on June 30.

Neeraj Chopra’s victory in Budapest with a throw of 88.17 meters made him only the third javelin thrower in history to win both the Olympic and World Championships.

Looking ahead, Neeraj Chopra is set to participate in the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, where he will aim to defend the gold medal he won in Indonesia in 2018. He emphasized the mental aspect of competing in significant competitions and expressed his readiness to compete with his fellow athletes, whom he considers good friends.
