Challenges in Campus Hiring for Engineering Students Class of 2024 at Tier-2 and -3 Engineering Colleges

The Class of 2024 at many of the country’s tier-2 and -3 private and government engineering colleges is facing one of the toughest years in recent history for campus hiring. Typically, IT/ITeS (Information Technology/Information Technology-enabled Services) companies play a significant role in recruiting a substantial number of students from these institutions. However, this year, several IT companies have either stayed away or deferred their hiring plans, causing concern among placement officials at these colleges.

In a typical year, IT/ITeS companies contribute to 30% to 50% of the total job offers at these engineering colleges located in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and other regions. However, this year, the situation seems different. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Cognizant, two major IT players, have not yet visited Government Engineering College, Thrissur (Kerala), which is raising concerns among students and officials alike. In the previous year, this college received more than 770 offers for its Class of 2022, which dropped to close to 570 offers for the Class of 2023. Unfortunately, they anticipate a further drop of 20% or more in offers for the current batch.

A similar situation is unfolding at the Poornima group in Jaipur, which manages three engineering colleges and one university. Many big IT/ITeS recruiters, including Infosys, Capgemini, and Cognizant, have not yet arrived for the 2024 batch. Only TCS has given a positive indication that they will hire in substantial numbers. To counter this challenging situation, the Poornima group has proactively reached out to at least 50% more recruiters this year.

The reasons cited by IT recruiters for their cautious approach include project cancellations and an uncertain demand environment, leading to reduced hiring numbers. Typically, IT services firms like Infosys, TCS, Wipro, HCLTech, and Cognizant hire a significant portion of their workforce from state government and private engineering colleges.

Despite these challenges, placement officials at these engineering colleges are not giving up hope. They remain optimistic that these recruiters will visit towards the end of the placement season in 2024. While IT companies are visiting Siddaganga Institute of Technology (SIT) in Karnataka, the numbers are lower compared to the previous year. Companies like Accenture, Tata Elxsi, DXC Technology, and Cisco have made appearances, but more are expected to join.

At Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering in Bengaluru, firms like Cognizant, Capgemini, Wipro, LTI Mindtree, and Infosys have not yet visited. Placement officials believe that these companies may arrive later in the year or in the new year for software engineer roles, but the numbers are expected to be lower than the previous year. Accenture and DXC Technology have confirmed their participation.

In summary, the Class of 2024 at tier-2 and -3 engineering colleges in India is facing challenges in campus hiring, primarily due to the cautious approach of IT/ITeS companies. However, there is optimism that as the placement season progresses, more recruiters will participate, offering hope to students aiming to kickstart their careers in the IT sector.

Please note that the situation may evolve over time, and it’s essential for students and placement officials to stay updated on the latest developments in campus hiring.
